The Body Scan: A Guided Mindfulness Practice
The body scan is a foundational mindfulness practice that involves systematically directing your attention through each part of your body, noticing whatever sensations are present without trying to change them. Developed as a core component of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) by Jon Kabat-Zinn, the body scan cultivates present-moment awareness, teaches non-judgemental observation of physical sensations, and can help release chronic tension that you may not even be aware you are holding.
To practise, lie down comfortably on your back with your arms at your sides and your eyes closed or softly focused. Begin by bringing your attention to the sensations in your left foot — the contact with the surface beneath you, any warmth or coolness, any tingling, numbness, or pressure. Simply notice what is there, without judging it as good or bad, and without trying to relax or change the sensation. If you notice tension, simply observe it with curiosity.
Gradually move your attention upward through your body: left ankle, lower leg, knee, thigh, then repeat on the right side. Continue through the pelvis, lower back, abdomen, chest, upper back, hands, forearms, upper arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, face, and the top of your head. At each region, spend one to two minutes simply noticing whatever sensations are present. When your mind wanders (and it will, repeatedly), gently notice where it has gone and guide it back to the body region you were attending to.
The body scan typically takes twenty to forty-five minutes for a full practice, though shorter versions focusing on key areas can be done in ten minutes. Regular practice increases your awareness of the connection between emotional states and physical sensations — for example, noticing that anxiety manifests as tightness in your chest, or that sadness settles as heaviness in your limbs. This body awareness becomes an early warning system that allows you to respond to emotional changes before they escalate.
