Making the Most of Your Therapy Sessions
Therapy is a collaborative process, and how you engage with it between sessions can significantly influence the outcomes you achieve. Research consistently shows that clients who actively participate in therapy — completing homework tasks, reflecting on sessions, and practising new skills in daily life — experience larger and more lasting improvements than those who attend sessions passively. This guide offers practical suggestions for maximising the benefit you receive from therapy.
Before each session, spend a few minutes reflecting on the previous week. What has gone well? What has been difficult? Have you noticed any patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviours? If your therapist set homework, have you attempted it? If not, what got in the way? Bringing these reflections to your session gives your therapist valuable data to work with and ensures that session time is used efficiently.
During sessions, try to be as honest and open as possible, even when it feels uncomfortable. Your therapist cannot help with difficulties they do not know about. If something your therapist says does not resonate, or if you disagree with a formulation or suggestion, say so — therapy works best when it is a genuine dialogue rather than a one-sided process. Take notes if it helps you remember key points, and do not hesitate to ask your therapist to clarify anything you do not understand.
After each session, review what was discussed and any homework tasks that were agreed. Try to implement changes while the session content is still fresh. Remember that change happens through practice, not through insight alone — understanding why you think or feel a certain way is valuable, but lasting change requires repeatedly practising new ways of thinking and behaving until they become automatic.
